I believe that choosing counselling can be a vital and radical act of self care.
There are many reasons why someone might come to therapy. Perhaps you have gone through a significant life change, creating a sense of overwhelm. You might be finding it difficult to manage the stresses and strains of life, or there's a sense of feeling stuck and not being able to move past a particular experience. Maybe you are noticing that you don't feel as in control of your emotional or physical responses to certain situations as you would like to and it is becoming problematic for you or your relationships. You might be struggling with depression or anxiety which is getting in the way of your hopes for the future. Or perhaps you are in a positive place in your life and feel like it's a good time to explore something from the past that still affects your present or you just want to understand yourself and your relationships better.
Whatever your reason to seek therapy you have probably already done the hardest part. To decide that you would like to have counselling can feel daunting and even scary, but be assured, it is a courageous and positive choice. It is courageous, because it is not always easy - after all, to embark on a journey, you must first leave home.
The counselling relationship is unlike any other. It is a space and time dedicated to you to explore experiences, thoughts and feelings in a completely non-judgemental, warm, and connected place. Possibility might then open up to gain different perspectives, find more self compassion and perhaps replace outdated ideas about yourself, so that you are able to move forward with greater clarity about your relationship with yourself, your loved ones, your past and your future. From this place it is possible to find meaning in the mysteries and difficulties that life presents.
It is, like all relationships, a conversation.
